Korosten Fortress, historically known as Iskorosten, is one of the most significant archaeological sites of Kievan Rus, located in the Zhytomyr region. In the 10th century, it was the capital of the Drevlian tribe and a powerful center of resistance against the central power in Kiev. The site became world-famous through the legend of Princess Olga, who in 945, after the murder of her husband Igor, took revenge on the Drevlians and set the fortified city on fire through a clever ruse. Today, visitors can see the impressive natural rock formations and reconstructed earthen ramparts in the city park, which offer insight into the former defensive strategy. The grounds also feature a monument to Princess Olga and Prince Mal, the leader of the Drevlians. Archaeological excavations on the castle hill have unearthed numerous artifacts from the 8th to 10th centuries, including weapons, jewelry, and ceramics. Its location on the high bank of the Uzh River gave the fortress natural strategic superiority and makes the site a photogenic excursion destination with deep historical meaning today.
