Solotvyno is a unique spa destination in Zakarpattia, situated on the right bank of the Tisza River, right across from the Romanian border. The town's name comes from its long history of salt mining dating back to the Middle Ages. Today, it is famous for its high-salinity lakes created by the subsidence of old salt mines. The most famous is Lake Kunigunda, where the salt concentration is so high that swimmers float effortlessly on the surface, much like in the Dead Sea. The saline waters and the black therapeutic mud found at the bottom are highly beneficial for skin conditions and respiratory health. Historically, Solotvyno was also home to world-class underground salt hospitals (speleotherapy) located deep in the mines to treat asthma. While access to the mines is currently limited due to flooding, the surface salt lakes draw thousands of tourists during the summer months. The area enjoys a mild microclimate, making it one of the warmest spots in Western Ukraine. Numerous recreation centers and hotels line the shores of the lakes, offering a lively vacation atmosphere with outdoor dining and traditional music. The town is culturally diverse, with a significant Romanian minority, and you will often hear Romanian, Ukrainian, and Hungarian spoken on the streets. Solotvyno is connected to the Romanian town of Sighetu Marmației via a bridge over the Tisza, making it a key point for cross-border tourism. The local cuisine reflects this mix, offering delicious Romanian mămăligă alongside Ukrainian borsch. The best time to visit is from June to August for the best weather and optimal water temperatures in the salt lakes.
