The Rooster's Crest (Creasta Cocoșului) is one of the most distinctive geological formations in Romania, situated in the Gutâi Mountains of Maramureș County. Geologically, the crest is a remnant of an ancient volcanic crater rim that was active roughly 9 million years ago during the Neogene period. Its vertical walls and jagged profile closely resemble a rooster's comb, which earned the formation its evocative name. Designated as a protected nature reserve since 1954, the area covers approximately 50 hectares to preserve its unique rock structures and biodiversity.
