Romny is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, located in the Sumy Oblast at the confluence of the Romen and Sula rivers. Its first written mention dates back to 1096 in the Laurentian Chronicle, underscoring its historical importance as a defensive fortress within the Kievan Rus'. During the Middle Ages, Romny flourished as a major trade center on routes leading toward Central Asia and later served as a significant administrative unit within the Cossack Hetmanate. The city is culturally significant as the site where one of the first monuments to the national poet Taras Shevchenko was erected in 1918. Economically, Romny developed through machinery manufacturing, textile production, and the processing of agricultural goods from the surrounding fertile plains. Despite various conflicts throughout the centuries, the city has preserved several historical buildings that testify to its past prominence as a commercial hub. Today, Romny serves as a key administrative and cultural center for the southwestern part of the Sumy region, maintaining its identity as a historic landmark.
