Pochayiv Lavra (Ukraine)

Weather…

Pochayiv Lavra, formally known as the Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra, is the second largest Orthodox monastery complex in Ukraine, located in the Ternopil region. Perched atop a 60-meter limestone hill, its brilliant white walls and golden domes dominate the surrounding landscape. According to tradition, it was founded in the 13th century by monks fleeing the Mongol invasion, who reportedly witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary on the hill. The main architectural feature is the Dormition Cathedral, built in the late 18th century in a distinct Late Baroque style with classical elements. The monastery houses several profound relics, including the 'Footprint of the Mother of God' on a stone from which a holy spring flows, and the Wonder-working Icon of Pochayiv. As a major center of pilgrimage in Eastern Europe, it remains a symbol of religious endurance and traditional monastic life. The site also includes a massive 65-meter-high bell tower and several cave churches used by ascetics throughout history.
