Kremenets Castle, also known as Bona Castle, sits atop the steep Castle Hill (Gora Bona) overlooking the town of Kremenets in western Ukraine. Built in the 13th century, the fortress gained historical fame in 1241 when it became one of the few Ukrainian castles to withstand the siege of the Mongol hordes led by Batu Khan. In 1536, Polish King Sigismund I gifted the castle to his wife, Bona Sforza, who modernized the fortifications and oversaw its transformation into a Renaissance-style residence. Its strategic location allowed for the control of trade routes between Galicia and Volhynia. Following a six-month siege in 1648, the castle was finally captured and largely destroyed by Cossack troops under the command of Maksym Kryvonis. Today, the imposing remains of the Gothic gate, sections of the defensive walls, and foundations of former buildings are preserved, offering a wide view over the historic old town of Kremenets.
