Pidhirtsi Castle (Ukraine)

Weather…

Pidhirtsi Castle is a magnificent example of a Renaissance fortified palace, representing the 'castello in villa' style that combined aristocratic luxury with defensive capabilities. Built between 1635 and 1640 by the renowned architect Guillaume Le Vasseur de Beauplan for Polish Hetman Stanisław Koniecpolski, it was once celebrated as one of the most beautiful residences in Eastern Europe. The palace was famous for its lavish interiors, vast art collection, and meticulously landscaped Italian gardens that earned it comparisons to Versailles. Its history is marked by periods of great splendor followed by tragic decline; it was severely damaged during World War I and used as a tuberculosis sanatorium in the Soviet era. A major fire in 1956 destroyed much of its original interior decoration. Currently, Pidhirtsi Castle is a key site within the 'Golden Horseshoe' of Lviv region castles and continues to undergo gradual restoration to preserve its architectural legacy.
