Pidhirtsi Castle is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable examples of a fortified palace in Eastern Europe. Built between 1635 and 1640 for Grand Crown Hetman Stanisław Koniecpolski, it was intended to serve as a site for high-society leisure and military defense. Its opulent interiors, which once included a private theater and vast galleries of European art, earned it the title of the 'Versailles of the East' during the 18th century. The complex features the main palace surrounded by bastions and a moat, and the wide-open St. Joseph’s Church, a circular Baroque masterpiece connected to the castle by a 300-meter-long linden alley. Although much of its inner splendor was lost to war and fire in the 20th century, the castle's exterior, with its elegant loggias and stone sculptures, remains remarkably imposing. The surrounding park was once famous for its Italian-style terraced gardens. Today, the site attracts those who appreciate atmospheric ruins and architectural history. Visitors can walk the grounds, explore the casemates, and admire the church's classical facade. Pidhirtsi is a key stop on the 'Golden Horseshoe' castle tour of the Lviv region. Despite its current state of partial ruin, the castle remains a powerful testament to the grandeur of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's golden age and continues to be a subject of ongoing restoration efforts.
