Zolochiv is a historically significant city in the Lviv Oblast of western Ukraine, situated on the Zolochivka River. The city is a key part of the "Golden Horseshoe" of castles in the Lviv region. Its preeminent landmark is Zolochiv Castle, a 17th-century fortification that served as a royal residence for Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland. A unique feature within the castle grounds is the Chinese Palace, one of the few of its kind in Eastern Europe, which now houses a museum of Oriental art. For centuries, Zolochiv was a center for trade and crafts, hosting a diverse population of Ukrainians, Poles, and Jews. The city's architecture also includes the Baroque Resurrection Church and the Neogothic Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption. In modern times, Zolochiv is known as the site of a major satellite communications station, providing a technological contrast to its historical core. The city is currently a popular destination for day-trippers from nearby Lviv.
