Berdiansk is a prominent port city and a popular health resort situated on the northern coast of the Sea of Azov. Established in 1827, the city was founded after coastal surveys identified the site as optimal for a new grain-exporting harbor. A defining feature is the Berdiansk Spit, a 23-kilometer-long sandy peninsula that extends into the sea and hosts numerous sanatoriums and sandy beaches. The Port of Berdiansk quickly grew into one of the region's busiest maritime hubs, driving the city's rapid expansion during the 19th century. Beyond tourism and shipping, Berdiansk is an industrial center focused on mechanical engineering and the production of agricultural machinery. The city is also famous for its therapeutic mud baths, which utilize mineral-rich deposits from nearby coastal lagoons. Throughout the town, unusual monuments can be found, such as the tribute to the goby fish, which served as a crucial food source during times of hardship. Today, Berdiansk balances its industrial role with its status as one of the most important recreational destinations in southeastern Ukraine.
