Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (Ukraine)

Weather…

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Enerhodar is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and among the ten most powerful in the world. Construction began in 1980, and the first of its six reactor units was connected to the grid in 1984. Each of the six VVER-1000 pressurized water reactors has a capacity of 1000 MW, resulting in a total capacity of 6000 MW. Prior to 2022, the plant generated approximately 20-25% of all Ukrainian electricity, serving as the backbone of the national energy supply. The facility uses water from the Kakhovka Reservoir to cool the reactors. Following the start of the 2022 Russian invasion, the plant came under Russian control, triggering global concerns regarding nuclear safety. Continuous monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on-site underscores the worldwide significance of this facility. The plant is not merely an economic entity but a critical piece of European infrastructure whose safe operation is decisive for the entire continent.
