Zaporizhzhian Sich (Khortytsia) (Ukraine)

Weather…

Khortytsia is the largest island on the Dnieper River and is revered as the spiritual and historical cradle of the Ukrainian Cossacks. In the mid-16th century, Dmytro Vyshnevetsky established the first fortified military center here, known as the Zaporizhzhian Sich. The island's high cliffs and strategic position within the river provided natural defenses against invaders. The Cossacks developed a unique democratic society on Khortytsia, featuring elected leaders and a common legal assembly. For centuries, it served as the bastion of resistance against Polish rule and Ottoman incursions until the Sich was liquidated by order of Catherine the Great in 1775. Today, the island is a National Reserve featuring a meticulously reconstructed museum complex of a Cossack fortress. Visitors can explore traditional wooden churches, barracks, and defensive walls, while also enjoying cultural performances. Khortytsia is also a vital nature preserve, home to rare flora and fauna unique to the Dnieper steppes.
