The Mykolaiv Zoo was founded in 1901 by Mykola Leontovych and is regarded as one of the oldest and highest-quality zoos in Ukraine. Originally starting as a private aquarium, it evolved throughout the 20th century into a major scientific and cultural center. The zoo houses an impressive collection of over 450 animal species, including many rare and endangered animals. It is particularly well-known for its successful breeding programs, especially for tigers and other large cats. The facility is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and maintains close cooperation with international partners. Visitors can explore spacious enclosures, a terrarium, and an aquarium, all designed according to modern standards. The zoo plays a vital role in environmental education and is a point of pride for the city of Mykolaiv, attracting numerous guests annually.
