Askaniya-Nova Biosphere Reserve (Ukraine)

Weather…

The Askaniya-Nova Biosphere Reserve, located in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine, is one of the oldest and most significant nature reserves in Europe. Established in 1898 by Friedrich von Falz-Fein on his family estate, it is unique for preserving a vast tract of fescue-feather grass steppe that has never been plowed. The reserve covers an area of over 33,000 hectares, with one-third designated as a strictly protected virgin steppe zone. Askaniya-Nova is world-renowned for its acclimatization zoo, where Przewalski's horses, zebras, antelopes, and buffalos roam in semi-free conditions across the open plains. In 1984, it was included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves, highlighting its global importance for ecology and species preservation. Beyond its fauna, the reserve features a magnificent botanical garden that flourishes in the dry climate thanks to an elaborate irrigation system, hosting over 1,000 species of trees and shrubs.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The prime season for wildlife viewing at Askaniya-Nova spans from May to early October, when the steppe is lush and exotic ungulates like Przewalski's horses and antelopes are most visible. Early autumn is particularly rewarding as migratory birds gather and the brown steppe grasses create remarkable backdrops for photography.
🌅
Best time of day
At dawn, the steppe comes alive with the calls of birds and the movement of grazing herds; this is the best time to spot predators like foxes. Dusk gives another peak activity period, especially for birds of prey hunting before nightfall, making late afternoon visits equally productive.
📜
Etiquette
Maintain at least 100 meters from all large animals and never attempt to feed or touch them, as they are wild and unpredictable. Stick to designated paths and viewing platforms to protect fragile steppe vegetation and avoid disturbing ground-nesting birds.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality binoculars with 8x to 10x magnification are essential for observing distant wildlife across the open landscape. Sturdy, waterproof walking boots, a sun hat, and plenty of water are necessary for the long, exposed walks in summer temperatures.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is situated near the town of Askania-Nova in southern Ukraine, typically accessed by car or guided tour from Kherson or Melitopol. Visitors must check in at the administrative building and may need to book a guided tour in advance to explore the core protected zones.
🦌
What to expect
Wildlife encounters on the vast steppe require patience; animals can be far away and may take time to approach. Settle in a quiet spot for at least an hour, scanning slowly with binoculars, and you will likely be rewarded with memorable sightings.
