The Azov-Syvash National Nature Park was established on February 25, 1993, in the Kherson Oblast in the northwestern Sea of Azov. It covers an area of approximately 52,154 hectares, spanning the western part of the Syvash lagoon and Byriuchyi Island. Geographically, the area is characterized by flat coastal landscapes, salt marshes, and steppes that host specialized flora and fauna. Historically, the region was a significant reserve for the imperial and later Soviet leadership before being converted into a national park. The park is a sanctuary for numerous endangered animal species, including saiga antelopes, kulans, and a variety of migratory birds that use the lagoon as a resting place. The Syvash lagoon, also known as the 'Rotten Sea', is a unique ecosystem worldwide due to its extremely high salinity and associated algae formation. Today, the park serves scientific research on halophytes and the preservation of maritime steppe landscapes. Protecting fragile water resources is a central task of the park administration in the face of climatic changes.

Best season

The best season for birdwatching at Azov-Syvash National Park is spring (April-May) during migration and autumn (September-October) when waterfowl return. In summer, numerous gulls, terns, and waders nest on the islands and sandbars.

Early morning hours are good for observing the highest bird activity, especially as coastal birds forage. Late afternoon before sunset also features good chances to see migratory birds in large flocks.

Maintain at least 150 meters distance from nesting colonies on the islands to avoid flushing birds. Access to the islands during breeding season is usually prohibited; stay on viewing platforms or boat routes.

A good spotting scope or binoculars with high magnification (20-60x) is recommended for viewing distant waterbirds. Rubber boots and windproof clothing are necessary due to the wet coastal environment and constant wind.
