Syvash Lake (Ukraine)

Weather…

Syvash, colloquially known as the 'Rotten Sea,' is a vast system of shallow lagoons and bays on the western coast of the Sea of Azov. Covering an area of approximately 2,560 square kilometers, it separates the Crimean Peninsula from mainland Ukraine and is almost entirely enclosed by the long, narrow Arabat Spit. The lagoon's defining characteristic is its extraordinary salinity, which can soar up to 200‰ during the hot summer months due to rapid evaporation. This hypersaline environment promotes the growth of beta-carotene-producing algae, giving the water a remarkable pink or reddish hue. The mineral-rich mud of Syvash is famous for its therapeutic properties and is widely used in medical balneology. Ecologically, the area is a vital wetland of international importance, serving as a critical habitat for migratory waterbirds within the Azov-Syvash National Nature Park. For centuries, the region has been a significant center for salt production, yielding high-quality sea salt through natural evaporation processes.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access is easiest from the town of Henichesk or via the Arabat Spit in the Kherson region. Rural roads and dirt tracks lead toward the shallow coastal lagoons and salt flats.
📅
Best season
Visit during late summer, typically July or August, to see the water turn its most vivid pink hue. Higher evaporation rates during hot months increase the salinity and color intensity.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is extremely flat and consists of marshy wetlands, salt crusts, and shallow lagoons. Some areas can be muddy and soft, making walking directly on the flats difficult.
🎒
What to bring
Wear old footwear that you don't mind getting salty or muddy, or sturdy water sandals. Sun protection like hats and high-SPF sunscreen is vital due to the lack of shade and high reflection.
🅿️
Parking
Park in Henichesk or near the designated entry points along the Arabat Spit. Informal parking is possible along the roadside, but ensure your vehicle is on stable ground to avoid getting stuck.
⚠️
Safety
Avoid walking too far into the mud flats as some sections can act like quicksand. Bring plenty of fresh water to wash off salt from your skin and to stay hydrated in the intense heat.
⏱️
Time needed
A brief stop to photograph the pink lagoons takes about 1 hour. Those interested in the unique ecology or therapeutic salt muds should plan for a half-day visit to explore more remote spots.
