Askania-Nova (Ukraine)

Weather…

Askania-Nova is the oldest biosphere reserve in Ukraine and one of the most significant steppe conservation areas in the world. Founded in 1828 by Friedrich von Falz-Fein in what is now the Kherson region, it currently spans over 33,000 hectares. The reserve's most unique feature is the 'virgin steppe', an 11,000-hectare area that has never been plowed, preserving the original flora of the Eurasian steppe. In addition to the protected wilderness, the reserve hosts a famous acclimatization zoo and a botanical garden supported by a sophisticated irrigation system. Askania-Nova gained international fame for its role in successfully saving the Przewalski's horse from extinction. Today, numerous exotic species such as zebras, antelopes, and bison live in semi-wild conditions across the vast grasslands. The reserve is part of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme and serves as a unique open-air laboratory for ecological research. Preserving this fragile ecosystem amidst an intensive agricultural region remains a constant challenge.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access is primarily gained via the city of Kherson or the town of Novooleksiivka, with paved regional roads leading directly to the biosphere reserve entrance. Local bus services run frequently to the settlement of Askania-Nova, where the main visitor facilities are located.
📅
Best season
The handy visiting window spans from late spring to early autumn, with May being particularly remarkable as the virgin steppe landscape bursts into bloom. During mid-summer, temperatures can soar, making excursions across the open plains more physically demanding.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is predominantly flat, consisting of pristine steppe landscape with well-established paths within the designated visitor areas. There are no significant elevation changes, making the walks accessible for casual hikers and families exploring the open territory.
🎒
What to bring
Be sure to bring effective sun protection, a wide-brimmed hat, and plenty of drinking water, as shade is extremely scarce in the open steppe. Binoculars are highly recommended for spotting rare species like Przewalski's horses from a respectful and safe distance.
🅿️
Parking
Parking facilities are available within the settlement of Askania-Nova, close to the main entrance of the reserve and the adjacent zoo. As the village is small, most amenities are within easy walking distance from the parking areas where you can leave your vehicle.
⚠️
Safety
Stay strictly on the marked trails to protect the fragile steppe vegetation and minimize the risk of tick bites. Be mindful of heatstroke symptoms during the summer months and always maintain a safe distance from the wildlife roaming the reserve's open areas.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical visit lasts about 4 to 6 hours, covering the steppe trails, the botanical arboretum, and the associated zoo area. For more extensive wildlife viewing or guided safaris into the core protected zones, it is best to allocate a full day for the experience.
