The Kazinga Channel is a 32 km natural channel linking Lake George and Lake Edward, situated entirely within Queen Elizabeth National Park. It is up to 2 km wide and hosts one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa, with an estimated 10,000 individuals. The channel's banks are lined with papyrus swamps and savannah, attracting over 500 bird species. Boat safaris are a major tourist activity, offering close views of wildlife. The channel supports a productive fishery, yielding tilapia and catfish. Its catchment area spans 18,000 km². The channel was designated part of the park in 1954 and is a Ramsar site. Oil exploration in the Albertine Rift poses a pollution risk. The channel also supplies water for irrigation and local communities.
