Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a crown jewel of African conservation. Stretching across the eastern border of the DRC, it has unparalleled landscape diversity, ranging from savannas and peat bogs to active volcanoes and glaciated peaks like Mount Stanley. The primary reason visitors brave the region's complexities is to experience intimate, guided treks to see the majestic, critically endangered mountain gorillas in their natural cloud forest habitat. Beyond gorillas, the park is home to chimpanzees, okapis, elephants, and endemic bird species. The pristine natural setting is fiercely protected by dedicated rangers. Independent travel is highly discouraged due to security concerns; all visits must be arranged through the park authorities. The dry seasons from July to September and January to February are the best times for gorilla trekking.
