Mount Elgon National Park (Kenya)

Weather…

Mount Elgon National Park encompasses a portion of Mount Elgon, a massive extinct shield volcano on the border between Kenya and Uganda. The Kenyan side of the park was established in 1968 and covers 169 square kilometers of diverse ecosystems, ranging from montane forests to high-altitude afro-alpine moorlands. A unique highlight of the park is its extensive network of lava tube caves, most notably Kitum Cave, where forest elephants venture deep underground at night to mine salt from the walls using their tusks. This behavior has earned them the name 'salt-mining elephants' and is a unique biological phenomenon found nowhere else. The flora includes striking species like giant lobelias and groundsels that are adapted to the mountain's harsh climate. Mount Elgon also serves as a vital water tower, with its rivers feeding major water bodies such as Lake Victoria and Lake Turkana, supporting millions of lives.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time to observe elephants in the salt caves is the dry season, typically from June to August and December to March. During these months, elephants most frequently visit the caves to access essential minerals.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are prime times as elephants leave the forest to enter the caves. This soft light enhances the dramatic rock formations and improves visibility of the animals.
📜
Etiquette
Maintain at least 20 meters distance from elephants and never block their path to the caves. Avoid disturbing the salt licks or shining bright lights into the cave interiors.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots are essential for the uneven terrain, and a reliable flashlight helps explore the dark caves. Binoculars are useful for spotting wildlife on the distant slopes.
🧭
Getting there
The park is reachable via a paved road from Kitale town, with a drive of about two hours. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended after rains due to muddy road conditions.
🦌
What to expect
Seeing elephants in the caves requires patience, as they appear only in short time windows. Plan multi-day visits or spend extended periods near the cave entrances.
