Mansourah Mosque (Algeria)

Weather…

The Mansourah Mosque near Tlemcen is the most striking remnant of a massive fortified city built by the Marinid dynasty during their sieges of Tlemcen in the 14th century. Sultan Abu Yaqub Yusuf ordered the city's construction in 1299 to serve as a permanent military base and a rival capital. The most iconic feature of the site is the 38-meter-high minaret, constructed from reddish sandstone and adorned with intricate geometric patterns typical of Moorish architectural style. Though the rest of the mosque, which once spanned over 5,000 square meters, was dismantled or fell into ruin, the minaret remains remarkably preserved as a symbol of Marinid artistic skill. The site is still surrounded by extensive remains of massive sun-dried brick walls that once enclosed the entire city of Mansourah. After the Marinids withdrew, the city was eventually abandoned and used as a source of building materials for nearby Tlemcen. Today, it stands as a monumental testament to the dynastic struggles and architectural grandeur of medieval North Africa.
