Kumi is the administrative capital of Kumi District in the Teso sub-region of Eastern Uganda, located approximately 250 kilometers northeast of Kampala. Situated along the main highway to Soroti, the town serves as a vital commercial and transit link for the regional economy. The landscape around Kumi is defined by expansive savannah grasslands and unique granite inselbergs, most notably the Nyero Rocks. These rock shelters contain ancient geometric paintings that are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list, representing some of the most significant rock art in East Africa. The local economy is centered on agriculture, with millet, sorghum, groundnuts, and cotton being the primary cash and food crops. Kumi has a historical connection to the Uganda Railway, which is undergoing revitalization to enhance trade efficiency. The town is also an educational hub for the sub-region, home to Kumi University and several vocational training institutes serving the Iteso people.
