Mbale is located in eastern Uganda at the base of Mount Elgon and serves as a major administrative and economic hub for the surrounding region. The city emerged in the early 20th century as a key center for the trade and export of high-quality Arabica coffee grown on the fertile volcanic slopes of the mountain. Geographically, the city is overlooked by the Wanale Ridge, which forms part of the western boundary of Mount Elgon National Park. Mbale is culturally significant as the heart of the Bamasaba people's biennial circumcision rituals, known as Imbalu. It is also home to the Islamic University in Uganda, established in 1988, which serves students from across East Africa. Positioned at an altitude of approximately 1,140 meters, the city enjoys a temperate climate that supports intensive agriculture, including the production of maize and various vegetables.
