Ani (Turkey)

Weather…

Ani was once the magnificent capital of the medieval Armenian Kingdom and a flourishing trade hub on the Silk Road. During its peak in the 10th and 11th centuries, it rivaled Constantinople and Baghdad in importance and splendor. Today, Ani is a haunting ghost city, its monumental ruins standing solitary on a vast plateau overlooking the Akhurian River gorge, which now forms the border between Turkey and Armenia. This UNESCO World Heritage site preserves exceptional examples of Armenian architecture. Key structures include the massive Ani Cathedral, the Church of the Redeemer, famed for its striking vertical split, and the Menüçehr Mosque, the first mosque built by Turks in Anatolia. The city's formidable defensive walls still speak to its former might. The profound silence of the plateau, broken only by the wind, lends Ani an almost mystical atmosphere. Most visitors travel to Ani from the nearby city of Kars. The best time to visit is in late spring when the plateau is carpeted with wildflowers, or in winter when the snow creates a dramatic, stark backdrop for the ruins. Given the scale of the site and the terrain, sturdy walking shoes and several hours of exploration time are essential. Ani remains a silent monument to the rise and fall of great civilizations.
