Akhaltsikhe, whose name literally means New Castle, is the administrative centre of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region in southern Georgia, with around 17,000 inhabitants, set on the Potskhovi River at about 1,000 metres elevation. The town is documented from the 12th century and for two centuries served as the seat of the Ottoman eyalet of Akhaltsikhe, mediating between Russians, Persians and Turks across the southern Caucasus. The Russian Empire captured the town only in 1828 and opened it for the resettlement of Armenians from Erzurum, leaving Akhaltsikhe with a significant Armenian community to this day. The main attraction is the Rabati Castle, fully restored in 2012, a vast complex containing a Georgian church, an Armenian church, a mosque, a madrasa, the feudal residence and a history museum displaying finds from the Bronze Age, Antiquity, the Ottoman and the Russian eras. Akhaltsikhe is also the gateway to the Vardzia cave city, the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park and the high-altitude lakes of Paravani and Saghamo.
