Tafahi Volcano is a prominent, forest-covered stratovolcano located in the far north of Tonga, approximately 9 kilometers north of Niuatoputapu. Rising to an elevation of 560 meters above sea level, it dominates the surrounding waters with a classic conical shape typical of active volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Although there are no documented historical eruptions, the morphological freshness of the cone and its geological structure suggest activity during the Holocene epoch. The island is encircled by a narrow fringing reef, which makes boat access challenging due to the steep coastline and heavy surf. Botanically, Tafahi is of great significance, as its steep slopes host dense rainforests that provide a habitat for rare Polynesian bird species. The small population of about 30 residents lives in a single village and focuses primarily on the cultivation of kava, which is regarded as some of the best in the Pacific due to the rich volcanic soil.

Getting there
Reaching the volcano is only possible via private boats from Niuatoputapu, with the rocky landing spot often washed over by heavy surf and swells.
Best season
The most stable weather conditions for an ascent occur during the dry season months, specifically from June to September, when the seas are less rough.

The mountain is a prominent, cone-shaped volcano with very steep flanks covered by dense tropical rainforest and loose volcanic debris in some sections.
What to bring
Wear robust hiking boots and bring gloves for protection against sharp volcanic rocks; a generous water supply is absolutely vital in the tropical heat.
Parking
Parking lots do not exist; boats must anchor at a safe distance from the coast or return to their home port after dropping off the passengers.
Safety
The ascent is physically very demanding; as there are no local rescue services, visitors should only attempt the climb with a guide and in peak fitness.
Time needed
