Angaha Ghost Town

Angaha is a ghost town on the remote island of Niuafo'ou, abandoned following a catastrophic volcanic eruption in 1946. Prior to the disaster, Angaha served as the island's administrative and commercial hub, renowned for its fertile soils and copra production. The eruption of 'Tin Can Island', as Niuafo'ou is famously known, prompted the Tongan government to conduct a full evacuation of the population to the island of 'Eua. The ruins of Angaha, which include the remnants of government offices, residences, and a church, stand today as silent witnesses to this historical tragedy. Extensive lava fields that engulfed parts of the town dominate the landscape, testifying to the overwhelming power of the earth's natural forces. Although some residents eventually returned years later, Angaha was never restored to its former prominence. Today, the site features a poignant look into the life of an isolated community and the perpetual threat posed by volcanic activity. Visitors can observe the crumbling walls as they are slowly reclaimed by the surrounding wilderness. Angaha remains a symbol of Tongan resilience and the challenges faced by those living on the kingdom's most distant frontiers.
