Niuafo'ou Caldera (Tonga)

Weather…

The Niuafo'ou Caldera is the central feature of the eponymous volcanic island in northern Tonga, also known as 'Tin Can Island' due to its circular shape. This massive collapse structure was formed by major prehistoric volcanic eruptions and now hosts the large Vai Lahi lake along with several smaller crater lakes. The caldera has a diameter of approximately eight kilometers and is surrounded by a steep rim reaching heights of up to 260 meters. Geologically, the region is highly active; numerous eruptions were documented in the 19th and 20th centuries, with the events of 1853 and 1946 significantly impacting the island's settlement history. Vegetation within the caldera is lush due to the fertile volcanic ash, making it a critical habitat for the rare Niuafo'ou megapode bird. Despite the constant volcanic threat, inhabitants repeatedly return for the fertile soils, making the caldera a vivid example of the coexistence between human life and natural forces.
