Vai Lahi is a spectacular crater lake situated at the heart of the volcanic island of Niuafo'ou, famously known as 'Tin Can Island.' Its name translates to 'Great Water,' reflecting its vast size as it occupies nearly the entire central caldera of the island. Reaching depths of approximately 84 meters, it is one of the deepest lakes in the Kingdom of Tonga. The water is slightly brackish and influenced by subterranean geothermal activity, which creates a unique chemical environment. Several small islands are located within the lake, formed by localized volcanic eruptions over centuries. Ecologically, Vai Lahi is a critical habitat for the rare Tongan megapode (Megapodius pritchardii), a bird that utilizes the warm volcanic soil along the shore to incubate its eggs. The lake’s isolation and ongoing volcanic dynamics make it a compelling subject of study for biologists and geophysicists globally.

Getting there

Reaching the remote Niuafo'ou Island typically requires boat travel or infrequent small aircraft flights. From the landing area, a hiking trail leads into the caldera's interior to the lake.

The best time to visit is during the drier months from May to October to avoid heavy tropical downpours. During this window, the weather is more stable for hiking along the crater rim.

The terrain is volcanic and involves descending into a massive caldera via unpaved paths. Trails can be steep and lead over loose lava rock as you approach the shores of the large lake.

Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential for the volcanic rock surfaces. Additionally, bring plenty of drinking water, sun protection, and weather-resistant clothing for the trek.

Conventional parking lots are nearly non-existent on the island; vehicles are usually left in small villages like Esia. From there, visitors proceed on foot or with a local guide to the lake.

The island is an active volcano, so local warnings and alerts must be strictly monitored. Due to the extreme remoteness, medical assistance is very limited and can take a long time to arrive.
