Fonualei Volcano (Tonga)

Weather…

Fonualei is an active stratovolcano located in the Vava'u Group of the Kingdom of Tonga, approximately 65 kilometers north of the island of Vava'u. The island is relatively small, measuring roughly 1.5 kilometers across and reaching a maximum elevation of 180 meters above sea level. Its geological structure is characterized by a steep-sided cone and a large summit crater that has been frequently active throughout recorded history. The first European observation of the volcano was made by the Spanish explorer Don Francisco Maurelle in 1781. Historical eruptions have been significant, with a major explosive event occurring in 1846 that covered large areas with ash. Today, the island remains uninhabited due to its volcanic activity and the lack of permanent freshwater sources. It serves as an important site for geological study and a nesting ground for various seabird species.
