Mariner's Cave (Tonga)

Weather…

Mariner's Cave is a unique underwater sea cave located on the northern end of Nuapapu Island in the Vava'u archipelago. The cave is famous for its submerged entrance, which requires visitors to dive approximately 2 meters below the surface to enter the main chamber. Once inside, the cave opens into a large cavern filled with air and illuminated by the blue light reflecting through the water. A fascinating physical phenomenon occurs within the cave where changes in air pressure caused by ocean swells create a thick mist or fog. The cave was named after William Mariner, a young Englishman who lived in Tonga between 1806 and 1810 after surviving a ship attack. It has since become a legendary destination for experienced swimmers and divers visiting the region. The interior walls of the cave are composed of volcanic rock and limestone, providing a rugged and natural aesthetic.
