Lake Ano (Tonga)

Weather…

Lake Ano is a scenic freshwater lake on Vava'u Island, representing a unique limnological ecosystem within Tonga. It is situated in a depression likely formed by the collapse of a subterranean limestone cavern system. Surrounded by dense tropical forest, the lake provides essential habitat for various indigenous bird species and invertebrates. Ecologically, Lake Ano is highly significant as it recharges the local water table and serves as a breeding ground for several freshwater organisms. Despite its proximity to the coast, the lake maintains very low salinity levels due to the effective natural filtration provided by the surrounding karst geology. The tranquility of the environment and the diversity of its riparian vegetation make it a site of high conservation priority. It has valuable insights into the hydrology of coral islands and how life adapts to isolated inland water bodies in the Pacific region.
