Feletoa Fortress is a historical defensive site located on the island of Vava'u, known for its pivotal role in the Tongan civil wars of the early 19th century. In 1807 and 1808, it was the scene of a famous siege led by the ambitious chief Finau 'Ulukalala II, who sought to consolidate power over the northern islands. The fortress was constructed with elaborate earthworks, deep trenches, and high palisades, showcasing the sophisticated military engineering of the era. Much of what is known about the siege comes from the accounts of William Mariner, a young Englishman who was held captive by Finau and witnessed the conflict firsthand. Geographically, the site is situated on a strategic height that allowed for the monitoring of movements across the Vava'u group. Today, the overgrown remains of the trenches and mounds can still be found, serving as a somber monument to a turbulent period in Tonga's history.
