Mandouri is the capital of Kpendjal-Ouest Prefecture in the easternmost part of the Savanes Region, just a few kilometres from the border with Benin. The town nestles in a vast, often dust-dry savanna plain that turns lush green during the short rainy season, providing excellent conditions for millet, sorghum, maize and groundnut cultivation. The population is predominantly Gourmantché and Anoufom, whose languages and customs are closely linked with those of neighbouring regions in Benin and Burkina Faso. Mandouri's economy is based on subsistence farming, livestock trading and the processing of shea butter, soumbala and groundnut oil. Its location along the Oti River also enables fishing and small-scale irrigated gardening. The wider area encompasses the Oti-Mandouri Faunal Reserve, home to antelopes, warthogs and water birds, and an important stopover for migratory birds.
