Cinkassé is a bustling border town at the very northern tip of Togo, sitting directly on the border with Burkina Faso. With around 30,000 inhabitants, it is the most important crossing point between the two countries and a central node of the West African trade corridor, which links Lomé via National Road 1 to Ouagadougou and onwards to Niger and Mali. Cinkassé hosts a modern dry port (Port Sec), where containers bound for landlocked states are transshipped, and is home to major customs, banking and logistics offices. Climatically the town sits on the edge of the Sahel, with long dry periods and short but intense rainy seasons. The population is multicultural: Mossi, Tchokossi, Peulh and Hausa traders live and work side by side. The originally agrarian economy of millet, sorghum, groundnuts and livestock is increasingly overlaid by transit-based commerce, freight forwarders, money changers and fuel stations. The markets bear witness to the relentless flow of trade.
