Ngorongoro Crater (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Ngorongoro Crater is often called Africa's 'Eden' and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This massive, 20-kilometer-wide caldera formed millions of years ago when a giant volcano collapsed in on itself. Today, its 600-meter-high walls create a natural enclosure for an incredible concentration of wildlife, with an estimated 25,000 large mammals living on the crater floor year-round. It is one of the best places in Tanzania to spot the endangered black rhino and features one of the highest densities of lions in the world. The diverse landscape inside includes the soda Lake Magadi, frequently pink with flamingos, Lerai forest, and expansive grasslands. This compact ecosystem allows for exceptional game viewing, where you can often see all of the 'Big Five' in a single game drive. Staying at a lodge on the crater rim provides dramatic views and easy access for early morning descents into the caldera. Game viewing is excellent throughout the year due to the permanent water sources. Located a few hours' drive from Arusha, Ngorongoro is a cornerstone of the northern Tanzania safari circuit and provides a unique blend of natural wonder and Maasai cultural heritage.
