Lake Eyasi is a seasonal soda lake located south of the Ngorongoro Highlands. It is not a typical wildlife safari destination but is famous for its cultural diversity. This is the home of the Hadzabe people, one of Africa's last hunter-gatherer tribes, who still speak a click language and live by ancient traditions. Visitors have the rare opportunity to join them on a morning hunt or observe the craftsmanship of the neighboring Datoga blacksmiths. The landscape surrounding the lake is characterized by massive baobab trees, acacia forests, and dry salt pans. Depending on water levels, the lake itself attracts numerous water birds, including flamingos and pelicans. It is a place of peace and seclusion, offering a deep look into ancestral Africa, far from the tourist crowds of the main national parks. Access is usually from Karatu via rough dirt roads. The best time for cultural visits is the dry season (June to October), as roads are more passable. Accommodation options include lodges and tented camps along the lakeshore. Local cuisine is simple and fresh, often featuring products from the surrounding onion-farming areas.
