Tursunzoda, located about 60 kilometres west of Dushanbe near the Uzbek border, is the foremost industrial city of Tajikistan. Its growth is bound to the massive Talco aluminium smelter, founded in the early 1970s, which with an annual capacity of around 500,000 tonnes remains the largest such facility in Central Asia. The town counts roughly 55,000 inhabitants and was deliberately built as a socialist model city, with residential blocks, a palace of culture, schools, and sports facilities for the plant’s workforce. Talco is also the country’s single largest electricity consumer and its most important hard-currency exporter, so swings on the global aluminium market translate directly into national economic performance. Beyond metallurgy, logistics and services are growing fast, as the nearby border and the strategic railway line to Termez make the city a regional transport hub.
