Roghun lies in the eastern Vakhsh valley not far from Dushanbe and is known worldwide for one of the most ambitious hydropower projects ever planned: the Roghun Dam, designed to reach 335 metres and become the tallest dam in the world. Construction began as early as the 1970s but was suspended for decades by the collapse of the Soviet Union and the civil war. Since the 2010s the project has been pushed forward with major effort, as the planned 3,600-megawatt plant should drastically reduce Tajikistan’s energy dependence and turn the country into a net electricity exporter. The town of Roghun itself, with around 25,000 inhabitants, mainly houses construction workers and their families. It is wedged between steep, gorge-like ridges that will force the Vakhsh into the future reservoir.
