Hisor lies just 25 kilometres west of Dushanbe and is best known for its imposing fortress and the surrounding historical reserve. The Hisor citadel, whose origins reach back to the 6th century BC, served for centuries as the seat of local beks and in the 18th, 19th centuries as an important centre of the Bukhara Emirate. Visitors today can explore the massive entrance gate flanked by two round towers, two madrasas, a caravanserai, and a 16th- to 18th-century mosque. The town of around 30,000 sits in the fertile Hisor Valley, one of Tajikistan’s most important agricultural areas, producing grapes, pomegranates, apricots, and vegetables. It also gave its name to the Hisor sheep, one of the largest fat-tailed sheep breeds in the world. Thanks to its proximity to the capital, Hisor has become a favourite weekend destination as well.
