Xiaoliuqiu, also known as Lamay Island, is a small coral paradise off the coast of Pingtung. It is the only place in Taiwan formed from coral rather than volcanic rock. The island is world-renowned for its exceptionally large population of green sea turtles, which can often be spotted directly from the shore or while snorkeling. The water remains pleasantly warm year-round, making the island a well-suited winter destination. The landscape is characterized by bizarre coral formations like Flower Vase Rock, the island's landmark. Numerous caves and coastal hiking paths invite exploration. Since the island is small, it can be perfectly circumnavigated in a day or a relaxed weekend by electric scooter. The laid-back island atmosphere stands in pleasant contrast to the hectic mainland. Local cuisine features specialties like 'Honey Twists' (crispy pastry) and freshly caught fish. Access is very easy via ferry from Donggang Harbor (approx. 20-30 minutes), which is easily reachable from Kaohsiung. The best time to visit is essentially anytime, as the climate remains subtropically mild. Xiaoliuqiu is a showcase project for ecotourism in Taiwan, with turtle protection being a top priority.
