Qal'at Ja'bar (Syria)

Weather…

Qal'at Ja'bar is an imposing medieval fortress situated on the left bank of the Euphrates, perched on a prominent hill overlooking what is now Lake Assad. Although the strategic site has been utilized since pre-Islamic times, the brick structure visible today dates mostly from the era of Nur ad-Din Zengi, who extensively rebuilt the castle starting in 1168. A particularly characteristic feature is the slender, cylindrical brick minaret, which is visible from a distance and serves as a rare example of Seljuk architectural forms in Syria. The castle played a key role in controlling the crossings of the Euphrates and was the site of numerous power struggles between Crusaders, Zengids, and Mamluks. Following the construction of the Tabqa Dam in the 1970s, the fortress was surrounded by water on three sides and is now accessible only via a narrow causeway. The massive outer walls and the 35 surviving defensive towers testify to the high engineering skills of medieval fortification in the Orient.
