Muttenz is a significant municipality in the canton of Basel-Landschaft and directly borders the city of Basel. Historically, the town is primarily known for its three medieval castle ruins on the Wartenberg, which characterize the landscape. An architectural jewel is the fortified church of St. Arbogast, one of the few preserved fortified church complexes in Europe, with origins dating back to the early Middle Ages. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Muttenz evolved from a farming village into a major industrial site, particularly through the Rhine port of Auhafen and the Muttenz marshalling yard, one of the largest freight yards in Switzerland. Its geographical location between the Rhine to the north and the forested hills of the Table Jura to the south makes the city a strategic transport hub. Today, Muttenz houses renowned educational institutions such as the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). Despite heavy industrialization, the municipality has preserved numerous green spaces and vineyards, creating an important ecological balance.
