💡 Tips

  • Mürren is car-free. It can be reached either via cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp followed by a train, or via the Schilthornbahn cable car from Stechelberg.
  • When visiting the Schilthorn (Piz Gloria), book your tickets in advance. For a thrill, stop at the intermediate station Birg and experience the 'Thrill Walk' along the cliff face.
  • Embrace the 007 legacy at the Schilthorn. The 'Bond World' exhibition is included in your ticket, and you can order a 'James Bond brunch' in the revolving restaurant.
  • For one of the best ground-level views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, walk to the upper part of the village. The perspective from there is iconic and unobstructed.
  • For a gentle, downhill walk with constant, impressive views, take the trail from Mürren to the neighboring village of Gimmelwald. It takes about 30-40 minutes.

🍽 Food

🍽
Bernese Rösti

Try a classic Bernese 'Rösti' (a crispy, fried potato dish) often served with a fried egg and bacon. Best enjoyed at a mountain hut after a hike.

🍽
Meringue with Cream

For dessert, indulge in a huge meringue served with lashings of thick Gruyère double cream. A simple but decadent local treat.

🍽
Hobelkäse (Shaved Cheese)

Ask for 'Hobelkäse', a special type of hard cheese that is shaved into fine curls. It's often served as a starter with bread and dried meats.

🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

🛍
Local Alpine Cheese

Buy some 'Alpkäse' (Alpine cheese) directly from a local farm or a specialty shop in the village. It's a true taste of the mountains.

🛍
Schilthorn Souvenirs

If you're a James Bond fan, the shop at the top of the Schilthorn is the place to get 007-themed memorabilia related to 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'.

🧘
The Northface Trail

This easy-to-moderate circular trail starts and ends in Mürren. It provides information on the history of climbing the Eiger North Face and gives many quiet benches with spectacular views.

🧘
Allmendhubel Flower Trail

Take the funicular to the Allmendhubel. Above the restaurant and playground, the 'Flower Trail' is a short, peaceful loop through alpine meadows.

🧘
Walk to Gimmelwald

The walk down to the tiny, preserved village of Gimmelwald is exceptionally peaceful, passing by traditional chalets and farms. It feels like stepping back in time.

Mürren is a characterful Walser village perched on a cliff-top terrace 800 meters above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. As it is not accessible by road, the village is entirely car-free, reachable only by cable car from Stechelberg or by mountain railway from Lauterbrunnen. This seclusion has preserved the authentic character of the village, characterized by its sun-darkened wooden chalets and narrow lanes. The village gained global fame thanks to the Schilthorn peak (2,970 m), which served as the filming location for the 1969 James Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." The revolving Piz Gloria restaurant at the summit provides a 360-degree panorama of over 200 Alpine peaks. In winter, the Mürren-Schilthorn ski area is a hotspot for freeriders and hosts the Inferno Race, the world's largest amateur ski event. Summer guests can explore spectacular hiking trails and one of the most thrilling via ferratas in the Alps, which runs directly below the village on a vertical rock face. The views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau from Mürren are among the most photographed in Switzerland. Local culinary highlights include the spicy Mürren Alpine cheese. The best time to visit is July and August for hiking, or January for winter sports.
