Stans is the capital of the Canton of Nidwalden and is set between Stanserhorn and Bürgenstock in Central Switzerland. The history of the locality is closely linked to the figure of Arnold von Winkelried, who sacrificed himself in the Battle of Sempach in 1386; a monumental memorial in the village center commemorates him. A dark chapter is the French invasion of 1798, after which Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi founded an orphanage in Stans, thereby significantly influencing modern pedagogy. The central village square, featuring the Church of St. Peter and Paul, is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Switzerland and is surrounded by stately Baroque buildings. Tourist-wise, Stans is primarily known as the starting point for trips up the Stanserhorn, which today are made via the world's first 'CabriO' cable car. Economically, the municipality is defined by the headquarters of Pilatus Aircraft, a world-leading manufacturer of training and multi-purpose aircraft. Despite its development into a modern administrative center, Stans has preserved its village character and traditional customs.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jul–Sep.
