💡 Tips
- The classic ascent is via Europe's first mountain railway from Vitznau, a scenic journey best combined with a Lake Lucerne boat trip. The line from Arth-Goldau is better for those arriving by train from Zurich.
- Your ticket (or a Swiss Travel Pass) is valid for all lifts and trains on the mountain. Feel free to hop on and off, for example, get off at Rigi Kaltbad, walk the easy path to Rigi First, and take the train from there to the summit (Rigi Kulm).
- Rigi is famous for its sunrises and sunsets. If your schedule allows, consider an early start or staying late. Some trains run after sunset, especially in summer.
- Don't just stay at the summit (Rigi Kulm). The area around Rigi Kaltbad, with its Mario Botta-designed spa, is a destination in itself. The flat 'Panoramaweg' trail from Kaltbad is first-rate for a gentle stroll.
- The weather can be inverted in autumn and winter, with fog in the valleys and brilliant sunshine on the mountain. This is called the 'Nebelmeer' (sea of fog) and is a spectacular sight. Check the webcams!
🍽 Food
A semi-hard cheese made from the milk of cows that graze on the mountain's pastures. You can try it in restaurants or buy it directly from an alpine dairy farm ('Alpwirtschaft') during a hike in summer.
A hearty one-pot dish of pasta, potatoes, cheese, cream, and onions, often served with applesauce. The ultimate Swiss mountain comfort food.
A simple but delicious dessert of a crispy meringue shell with a generous dollop of thick double cream. Enjoy it on a sunny restaurant terrace.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
On many hiking trails, you'll pass 'Alpwirtschaften' (alpine farms) that sell their own cheese, dried sausages, and honey directly to walkers. Look for signs saying 'Direktverkauf' (direct sale).
The shop at the Rigi Kulm summit station features the usual range of souvenirs, but look out for vintage-style posters of the historic cogwheel railway.
Take the cable car from Kräbel (near Goldau) to reach this less-visited part of the Rigi massif. It's a quieter starting point for hikes with beautiful views towards the east.
An easy trail starting near Rigi Kaltbad that is especially beautiful in early summer. It's quieter than the main path to the summit and features signs identifying the protected alpine flora.
Near Rigi Kaltbad, this small chapel is built into the cliff face. It's a unique and peaceful spot for a moment of reflection, a short walk from the station.
Water temperature…
The Rigi, often called the 'Queen of the Mountains,' stands majestically between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug, and Lake Lauerz. Its history is deeply rooted in tourism: in 1871, Europe's first cogwheel railway was opened here between Vitznau and the summit. Today, the mountain remains a top excursion destination, accessible from three sides via railways and cable cars (Vitznau, Arth-Goldau, and Weggis). The highest point, Rigi Kulm at 1,798 meters, provides 360-degree views of 13 lakes and the vast Alpine range. A unique highlight is the Mineral Baths & Spa in Rigi Kaltbad, designed by star architect Mario Botta, where guests can relax in healing spring water while gazing at the peaks. Rigi is a year-round destination: summer brings 120 kilometers of hiking trails, while winter features family-friendly skiing, sledding runs, and groomed winter walking paths. The car-free zone ensures a peaceful and restorative atmosphere. Dining options range from rustic alpine huts to upscale hotel restaurants in Kaltbad and Kulm. A trip to Rigi is best combined with a boat cruise from Lucerne to Vitznau. Because its terrain is gentler than other Central Swiss peaks, it is great for leisurely walks and picnics on expansive alpine meadows. Autumn is often the best time for clear, far-reaching views.
