Buhen (Sudan)

Weather…

Buhen was perhaps the most impressive and largest of the ancient Egyptian fortifications in Nubia, located on the west bank of the Nile near the Second Cataract. Originally established during the Old Kingdom as a copper-smelting settlement, it was transformed into a massive military citadel during the Middle Kingdom by Senusret III around 1860 BC. The fortress featured a double wall system, a deep ditch, and projecting bastions with embrasures for archers, making it an architectural masterpiece of ancient defense. Its inner city was organized on a grid pattern, containing temples, administrative buildings, and barracks for a large permanent garrison. During the New Kingdom, the site was expanded, and a magnificent temple was built by Queen Hatshepsut and Thutmose III, featuring high-quality reliefs. Unfortunately, following the construction of the Aswan High Dam, the entire site was submerged under Lake Nasser in the 1960s. Before its disappearance, extensive archaeological surveys provided a wealth of information about Egyptian military life and metallurgical industries in the region.
