Kumma (Sudan)

Weather…

Kumma, also known as Semna East, is an ancient Egyptian fortification situated on the east bank of the Nile, opposite the fortress of Semna. Constructed during the Middle Kingdom under the reign of Senusret III, roughly between 1860 and 1840 BC, it served as a vital component of the military frontier system in Lower Nubia. The fort's primary purpose was to provide cross-river support to Semna and ensure total control over the Second Cataract's passage. Within its walls, a significant temple dedicated to the god Khnum was built during the New Kingdom under Thutmose II and Thutmose III. This temple contains detailed reliefs and inscriptions depicting royal offerings and military victories, showcasing the continued strategic importance of the site centuries after its initial founding. Like its counterpart, Kumma was affected by the rising waters of Lake Nasser, leading to the relocation of its temple to the National Museum of Sudan in Khartoum to prevent its destruction. The site remains a testament to the complex border management strategies employed by ancient Egyptian pharaohs.
