Askut (Sudan)

Weather…

Askut is an island fortress located in the Nile, south of the Second Cataract, which served as a specialized logistical and granary hub during the Middle Kingdom. Constructed during the reign of Senusret III in the 19th century BC, its primary function was to store and protect massive quantities of grain required to supply the various garrisons stationed along the Nubian frontier. The architecture of the fort was specifically designed around its central granary, with thick walls and narrow access points to ensure the security of the vital food supplies. Unlike the larger defensive citadels, Askut focuses on internal storage and distribution, reflecting the sophisticated planning of the Egyptian military supply chains. Excavations have revealed a wealth of organic remains and sealings, providing evidence of the administrative control exerted over the distribution of rations. Although the site is now submerged beneath the waters of Lake Nasser, it remains a critical example of specialized ancient military architecture, revealing the complex logistics of the Egyptian state.
