Pigeon Island National Park is one of only two marine national parks in Sri Lanka, situated approximately one kilometer off the coast of Nilaveli in Trincomalee. The park consists of two islands, Large Pigeon Island and Small Pigeon Island, covering a total area of 471 hectares. Originally designated as a sanctuary in 1963, the area was elevated to national park status in 2003 to protect its delicate coral reefs. The region is renowned for its exceptional marine biodiversity, housing some of the best-preserved coral reefs in the country with over 100 recorded coral species. Divers and snorkelers can observe a wide variety of marine life, including blacktip reef sharks and endangered sea turtles such as the hawksbill turtle. The islands derive their name from the rock pigeons that inhabit the rocky outcrops of the smaller island. Management is overseen by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, with a focus on shielding the reefs from anthropogenic impacts and the effects of climate change.

Arriving early in the morning is highly recommended to beat the intense midday heat, avoid the largest tourist crowds, and enjoy the best lighting conditions for photographing the bustling marine life.
Etiquette
It is strictly forbidden to stand on or touch the fragile corals; visitors must not chase or harass the reef sharks and turtles, and the use of reef-safe sunscreen is mandatory to protect the delicate ecosystem.
What to bring
While rental equipment is available, bringing your own well-fitting snorkeling mask and fins ensures maximum comfort; a long-sleeved UV rash guard is also highly advised to protect against the strong tropical sun.
Getting there
The marine park is traditionally reached via a short, fast boat ride taking about fifteen minutes from the coastal town of Nilaveli, with trips easily arranged through various licensed local operators.
